The Ponsanorosa vineyard is the creation of Suzanne Ponsano-Cruz Located on a portion of the Curtis Creek Ranch area on top of a knoll overlooking Curtis Creek.
Ponsano, a longtime resident, is one of many Italian families to inhabit the Mother Lode. She first moved here as a young child when her father was employed to work on the Stevenot Bridge.
Situated at an elevation of 2550 feet, this unique micro climate seemed idea for planting a boutique vineyard. Wanting to deviate from the seemingly overabundance of other Italian varieties it was decided to plant classic a Bordeaux blend of grapes. Based on soil studies and elevation, the grapes that were decided upon were, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot, where she plans to produce up to 100 cases of premium red wine annually. Clones and root stalks were purchased from Duarte Nursery. Owing to the large transient deer population, additional alternative crops of Lavender, lemon grass and woody ornamentals were planted due to their high market value. Lavender for its value in food and its soothing properties; Lemon grass as a repellent to mosquito’s and woody ornamentals for their value in floral arrangements.
